Martin “Marty” Baron served as executive editor of The Washington Post from Jan. 2, 2013, to Feb. 28, 2021, overseeing print and digital news operations. Newsrooms he led earned 17 Pulitzer Prizes, with 10 at The Post. The publication won awards for national reporting, explanatory reporting, investigative reporting, criticism, feature photography, and public service, the latter recognizing revelations of secret NSA surveillance. Previously, Marty edited the Boston Globe for 11½ years, winning six Pulitzers including one in 2003 for The Globe's coverage of the Boston Catholic sexual abuse scandal. He has also held top positions at The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and the Miami Herald. Born and raised in Tampa, he became a prominent defender of the First Amendment during his time at The Post, emphasizing the role of journalists in society with the famous quote, "We are not at war… we are at work." He is the author of the book Collision of Power: Trump, Bezos and The Washington Post.
